A Message to HCBA Members Re: Standing for Justice from Thomas J. Rechen, President
A message from HCBA President Thomas J. Rechen
Dear Fellow HCBA Member:
These past few weeks we have witnessed America at its very best. At its best when we reach out to help an elderly neighbor, support a friend in need, and deliver food to local shelters and food banks. At its best when we come together and limit our activities and associations in order to stop the spread of a virus that is deadly to those who are vulnerable. At its best when those who are able to do so work long hours providing health care, food and supplies, and emergency services to those in need, with full awareness of the personal risks.
But these past few weeks have also provided stark reminders of a very different America. An America where racial hatred and abuse still exists. An America where inequities in our system of justice are evident. An America where almost 250 years after our founders wrote “that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creators with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness,” we have clearly failed to give those words true meaning for all of our citizens.
